Dan is past-chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Marketing Association, the world's leading association for marketing professionals.

In 1986, Dan's contributions to health care marketing and strategic planning earned him the Steuart Henderson Britt Award for excellence in marketing presented by the American Marketing Association (an honor he shares with the late Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's).

In 1989, the Academy for Health Services Marketing further recognized Dan's contributions to the field, particularly his efforts related to physician marketing, by awarding him with the Kotler Award named for Northwestern University's renowned marketing professor, Philip Kotler. (Former Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, M.D., was also a recipient of the Kotler Award.)

For more than two decades, Dan has been a contributing editor on strategy to the American Hospital Association publications and is on the editorial board of a number of other publications. He has published more than 90 articles on strategy and leadership. He is a three-time winner of "best article of the year" awards from the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Hospital Association.

Dan has completed four landmark studies focused to the nation's most successful hospitals as well as its leading physician group practices. The most recent of these research projects reflects three years of work with the institutions at the top of U.S. News & World Report's best hospitals in America including Johns Hopkins, Mayo, and The Cleveland Clinic.

In 2002, working on behalf of Abbott Laboratories, Dan completed a yearlong project focused to the "Sustainable Hospital of the Future." The project involved CEOs of 9 of America's leading hospitals and health systems and produced a "Model for Sustainability" that is now being applied by several organizations. One output of the project was a 80-page monograph published by Abbott.

Dan holds a BA in History and an MBA in marketing.

"A strategy delineates a territory in which a company seeks to be unique...Strategy is about deliberately choosing to be different."
